Project Lockjaw
Role Designer
Description Lockjaw has gained notoriety for being the first successful independent Alternate Reality Game. What started with 100 players from “the Beast” (the promotional game for the movie AI: Artificial Intelligence) came to life because of the work of six dedicated game designers. The game followed the adventures of a handful of urban explorers as they uncovered a corrupt biomedical corporation and a city created for immortality.
In Detail

Having never undertaken such a project, none of us quite knew what to expect or how to bring it to fruition. As we struggled with those concepts, we learned a great deal of how to work in a small virtual team as well as the basics of good game design.

As one of the chief game designers, I was responsible for managing the development team as well as four of the game websites, content on several others, a dozen different characters, puzzle development, interactive content (including weekly chats with the players held in character), game design, and monitoring the player community. Of those responsibilities, monitoring the player community was one of the most important to me as none of us had experience in creating games and our chief guide in game development was player satisfaction. This constant monitoring allowed us to create a very rich world that reacted to the players, encouraging a very collaborative and supportive player base.

That player base has since come to be the foundation of the Alternate Reality Gaming community as the two integral community sites (ARGN and Unfiction) were developed during Lockjaw and are maintained by Lockjaw players Steve Peters and Sean Stacey. Additionally, many Lockjaw players have taken a very active role in the community by maintaining community resources and creating their own independent games. Both of which have been remarkable to see happen and something that was beyond our wildest expectation when we began the project. I am pleased to have been such an integral part in the success of Lockjaw, both the independent game and a community, which helped to encourage the growth of the genre.
